This  is elk damage.  This WAS a healthy hackberry tree–notice the two major, broken stems; the bark is also severely rubbed, both on this side and the other.

This is, of course, caused by these:

So today I called this gentleman, Mike King, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources:

Since my efforts months ago with the Department of Wildlife failed miserably (political/public corruption–more on that here) I went to the last remaining, rational possibility.  I left a voice message saying just that, and that I will seek injunctive relief unless laws relating to damage control materials for “big game” (e.g., deer and elk) are enforced and available to all.
