The Wizard of Lies is about as good as it gets.
Hundreds of books, documentaries, and non-fiction articles have been made or written on the Bernie Madoff scandal. Family members, victims, employees and everyone else have been interviewed. Lawyers, law enforcement, and investment analysts have provided the professional view. Now with about ten years since, the history is clear.
The Wizard of Lies has received plenty of attention but mostly tepid reviews. Why do you go to a movie? The answer is to be entertained and watch the art of movie-making. Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro are tough to match. Hank Azaria is really good. The rest of the cast… not so much; Peter, Mark, and Eleanor Squillari were better in the ABC Madoff mini-series. The direction, music, and cinematography make it a pleasure to watch. But mostly, De Niro and Pfeiffer steal it.
