This is a really good movie. It is not great. It is simple.
My biggest complaint is that Claire Forlani does not look like the teenage Ruth.
It is a crowded genre: flashbacks to youth, coming of age, first sexual experiences, and beachside summers… I first saw this on television and, with commercial interruptions and some thirty minutes cut out it was nearly impossible to appreciate it. Deleting the sex scenes totally changes it. Olivia Williams has always been a favorite. Daniel Craig shows range and depth. Writer director Baillie Walsh is to be commended; everything has a purpose, it all adds up. It works.
